It seems like it would make more sense to have regular checkpoints and stings around the city for stopping cars the way the police check for missing or expired car registration plates to catch people or ex-cons with unregistered guns.  Otherwise they will trade in useless weapons and go out and up grade their handguns by buying at one of the many legal SF gunshows.  Studies have shown many weapons are obtained illegally at gunshows which was the case with the student responsible Columbine massacre.  He obtained his weapon at a gun show.  All Perata is doing is trying to capitalize off of a poor ten year's misfortunes. Frankly, it's disgusting if not outright obscene.  And Sen.  Perata is so greedy he'll probably be the first to collect his $250 reward.

Its easy to be cynical, however the concept of one less gun is a good one and should be encouraged throughout our cities.

Often guns are used under the influence of alcohol or drugs and as we have learned the consequences are deadly.

I don't blame the politicians as often its a symbol of leadership or getting the ball rolling.

Conflicts, neighborhood disputes need not be settled with firearms.

Something to think about?

Buy back is a total waste of time The morons that are destroying this city, will not participate in the farce.

i agree there needs to be random, profile stops, especially late nights. sadly, we know who are committing these murders, and check points etc should be encouraged. There's  a club in Oakland that has a strict dress code; no tennis, no hoodies, no white tees and no pants hanging arounnd your ankles, These folks can't  get into the club, but they are hanging around till it closes.

guess what they are waiting for?

this is who OPD needs to roll up on and suprise them.

be assured, they would felons in possession of guns, folks violating their parole  requirements,  dope, and probably some suspects in unsolved crimes it's the same folks over and over again.

i am sure we will hear howls of violating folks civil rights, but these morons are definitely there to violate someone's rights, one way or another.
