Wow, insect control has not evolved much since the days of spraying with DDT. They're using mosquitofish to eat mosquito larvae, an aggressive fish that also eats the larvae of the mosquito's natural predator, the dragonfly, thus perpetuating the mosquito problem.
Dragonflys are voracious predators of mosquitos that dramatically reduce mosquito populations. However if you introduce the NON-NATIVE SPECIES, mosquitofish, you help destroy the mosquitos natural enemy (the dragonfly) and perpetuate the cycle of mosquito infestation.
Beyond that, recent studies have shown that the introduction of mosquitofish into California's habitat may be causing the reduction in the population of native species of newts and treefrogs. Too bad those in charge of these things are largely clueless or opting for the most expedient though not best way to approach the problem of mosquito infestation.
