I dont know what to think about this one till I hear what witnesses have to say, hopefully there are some. Most kids walking around or posted on the streets of Oakland carry shotties, sawed off or not, for protection against adversaries not the police. This is why most all run from the police when their dirty (carrying something illegal) till they have a chance to ditch whatever they have. Many street-wise Oakland cops have came up against these types of situations on their beat & can basically recognize whose packing & whose not, on sight. Regardless, no doubt there's more to this and I want to hear what witnesses have to say. Someone's 16 yr old baby is dead and I feel her pain just as every other mother who has lost their baby to this senseless violence

If the kid had any sense, he would have dropped the gun when he saw the officers approaching and raised his hands. Pointing at police sounds like "suicide by cop" to me

Bluepeas, I have stayed away from these new forums, because they are cumbersome and I've lost interest. With that said, your post has brought me out of retirement. I know, from an unsolicited profile you sent to me, that you work in some sort of social service capacity with the youth in Oakland. I am stunned by your adoption of their lingo to express your supposedly grown up opinion about this incident. In so doing, you romanticize their criminal behavior and their misguided notions about what it is that they are doing! You encourage it by repeating it in their half-witted, drawn-from-some-gangster-movie terms. Call it what it is - a gun! The same instrument that is responsible for the killing, robbing and mayhem on the streets of Oakland. And, by the way, carrying these guns for protection against rivals (of what, the highest SAT score?) is against the law. Furthermore, how do you know they do not carry them to use against the police? Check the statistics and find out how many police officers are murdered by gunfire each year! As an adult, especially one who works with teenagers, you are responsible for telling them, in no uncertain terms, that carrying a weapon can be a death sentence. That sentence may come from the police, or one of their dope dealing rivals! Perhaps you should be encouraging them to all seek entrance to Harvard or Yale. Now, that is a rivalry I think we could all get behind.

AND WHAT DO YOU SAY TO ALL THE KIDS WORKING AT KFC, BLOCKBUSTER, ETC. GETTING RIPPED OFF BECAUSE THEIR (AND OUR) TAXES ARE WASTED IN THE HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN ORDER TO PAY FOR THE COURT COSTS, EMERGENCY ROOMS, AND INCARCERATION OF THESE SUBPAR PROTOHUMANS ?

Kids who carry around shotguns are not "subpar protohumans". They are kids who have fallen on the wrong path in life? These racist disgusting terms are only used against black and Latino kids. When during prohitiion in this country in the l930's did you ever hear the gangsters in this country referred to as "protohumans"?

If you want to talk about "protohumans", let's talk about all the murderous, homicidal dictators the US has propped up with our tax dollars: Homicidal maniacs like Papa Doc Duvalier, Gen. Pinochet, who killed 3,000 of his own citizens in a stadium in one day and was brought into power by a coup engineered by our own CIA. Let's talk about the School of Americas that actually teaches miliary officers in other countries to murder, torture, maim and kill.

The US is the leading country is torture techniques at this time. We are a warlike, militaristic society that has moved far away from the Geneva Accords and the lessons of WWII. Who, exactly, do you think these kids are imitating in the real world?

The problem is that there are so many youth that are parentless and fallen by the wayside in Oakland do to the welfare regulations that encouraged too many children and non--parenting. These kids simply don't know better and that is sad and tragic. But to refer to them in such ugly terms is a sad and tragic commentary on the society that allowed this to happen and the condemns the children from such homes. Individuals in a better position should know better, but act equally debased in their humanity.

We need widespread intervention in Oakland at crises levels. We need Mayor Dellums to stand up to the plate and hammer at the crisis and make appeals to the elders in these neighborhoods to not sit by. The problem is, too, that many of these neighborhoods are saturated with so many youth who are lost, and their parents too. This is society's tragedy, a society that has allowed this to happen, and a city's too, that didn't step in in time and ameliorate the conditions producing this crisis. A society that has allowed the widespread and wholesale production and marketing of weapons illegally.

We have one of the most violent societies in the world. We have mass murders and serial killings going on, have gone on. And most of these mass murders and serial killings are not done by lost, unparented black Oakland youth. But nobody calls the fathers who kills their children, wives and relatives in mass murders protohumans. Nobody calls those who send people off to fight for the profits of Halliburton and the other big oil producers, "protohumans". No, this is a term and racist epithet solely reserved for African Americans in Oakland by people who should be able to put things into proper perspective but are unable because they are poisoned by racist ideology and thinking.

What's the big crime here? Someone using the term "shottie", or someone referrring to these kids as "protohumans"? Maybe it's a bad choice of terms but at least Bluepeas is trying to do something with these youth the best that she can. She's not sitting on the sidelines by making moralistic, superficial judgements like some who aren't trying at all to help these lost youths at all.

There are some who don't want to believe youth can be saved nor invest in them at all. There are some who are sick enough to believe the penalty for carrying a weapon on the streets should be street executions which are not legal in this country as far as I know. And if they do become so, then we are all in serious trouble, because then anyone can become subject to MURDER on the streets of our city based on a police report of a supposed weapons. To take a human life is no small thing, regardless of whose life it is, and and those who take it lightly themselves are on the moral path downhill into the very camp in which they label others: "protohumans". They are people who have lost their humanity and respect for others, already.

What??? Are you serious? You mean, kids carrying sawed off shotguns are not part of a problem, especially if they are black or latino? What the hell? Since the police shooting, gang members have setup in the intersections with automatic weapons and have shot at rivals at a rosary service. Sounds like we have gang warfare here. Agreed? And a kid carrying a shotgun whose death sets off a "gang war" isn't part of the problem??? What about his parents who said he was never involved in gangs? They are just as much to blame as he is. I guess as long as a tiny minority of the population consistently makes up a majority of the prison population with violent crimes, I guess that's where the finger will point. I mean, African Americans make up 13% of the population. What's that make AA males? About 6% of the population? So, what's the violent crime rate of adult AA males? A hell of a lot more than 6%. Statistics don't lie. Nobody put a gun to these kids heads and told them to put a gun to peoples' heads. Right? So, another minority in Oakland is involved in a large scale gang war. And anyone complaining of this is racist? I think the facts speak for themselves. The minority neighborhoods in Oakland and much of the Bay area are becoming breeding grounds of gangs, violence and death. Blame it on whoever you want, but it's the people committing the crimes that are supplying the statistics. And don't forget, by the time someone is actually caught and sent to prison, how many crimes did they actually get away with?

Calm down Oakpundit, I believe that the prefix "proto" is defined as "combining form, first." I suspect what that poster meant to say is subhuman! In any event, how do we know that those officers were not trying to help that young man when things went awry. If memory serves, the shooting occurred at noon on a school day. Perhaps the officers were going to take him to the truancy center when, much to their dismay, the gun became the larger issue. I imagine responding to the so-called institutional racism of the police that you were trying to put forth will be a waste of time. We will have to agree to disagree. I will throw down a challenge. Please provide me with evidence that there are white gangs in the area of 79th Ave. and Rudsdale St. and I will concede that this shooting had anything to do with race. Good luck!

JIF, you calm down too. I wasn't putting forth anything about this being an "institutional" shooting so stop putting words in my mouth. I was objecting to the posters' language trying to justify these shootings every time a kid gets shot. It's not always the officers fault but it's not always the kids faults' either. We don't need to villanize either party. We need to figure out how to prevent it so young kids and others don't unnecessarily lose their lives instead of sitting and cheering on these deaths from the sidelines like some kind of ghouls.

Not a gang member? Not affiliated with gangs? Carrying a gun, but had his hands in the air? COME ON PEOPLE! When your memorial service invites a drive-by what should we think and believe? Someone? Anyone with a reasonable explanation for why a drive-by shooting would occur at a funeral for someone whose family claims was not in a gang? Any chance anyone saw the footage of those who were in attendance at this somber event? They looked like gang members to me, but then again I've been accused of making harsh and judgmental comments before. And, if the dearly departed was not a gang member and this was a random event, why postpone the funeral? Lets get real, this was no innocent child! But the sad part is his family is either lying or blind to the fact that their son was involved in a dangerous enterprise. The honorable thing to do would be to denounce the gang lifestyle that took their son's life and insist that those who attend his funeral not wear tee shirts with "RIP" and his street name written on it. Not likely. Not in Oakland, where given the choice to do the right thing or the wrong thing the latter will always prevail. Oh well, lets find someone else to blame!
