Ouch, that was two blocks from my house. O well, we had a murder 300 feet away a month ago.

I kept telling my co-workers that something went down up 35th. I saw 5 police cars swarm up 35th and the helicopters circling around. God bless and help Oakland. I love my city, i just hate crime.

Jesus Christ when did 35th turn into a war zone! A friend of mines moved to the vicinity of this shooting and told me her sons been shot at 3 x's now, robbed AND her car stolen all in front of the house and now she has to move again! This don't make any sense. Than, last night a kid came bangn at my door waking me up, came rushing in wanting to borrow a movie & said, "Man it's dangerous out there, were gonna to need a gun, those Mexicans are going crazy over there on 'blah blah' street!!" (where his aunt jus moved b/c she THOUgHT it was still a decent quieter street). I told him everybodys going crazy, must be the heat & too much time on their hands.

This generation has got it really bad, especially in Maryland where they have to protect themselves from their peers AND a police dept full of murdering vigilantes. It has to be hard for our kids when living in America is no different then living on the frontlines in Iraq. They can't even feel safe in their own homes, and in Oakland they're constantly having nightmares of being shot, it's sickening! As a female growing up in Calif & Hawaii, friends from BOTH states & I use to have to carry small knives for protection. But if I grew up in these x's where it's gotten even worse, I'm not going to lie about it, I'd probably be packing too AND carrying a knifeEmbarassed. I love myself too much Innocentto go out w/ out a fight behind of some mentally unbalanced low-esteemed wanna-be hard idiot who thinks he's still in some 3rd world country or the wild wild west

Is no one paid to monitor and correct these type of problems?! Not just lock them up but help to curve it?!

San Jose doesn't have these problems because it has a competent mayor who makes public safety a priority.  Oakland has do-nothing Dellums and Deborah Edgerly who is working to circumvent the OPD's effort to clean up Oakland gangs.  The people who run Oakland are criminals themselves like Edgerly, who is currently under federal investigation and Dellums who spends tax money to stay at 5 star hotels even though he owns a home across the street.  Richmond has had a drop in crime too and that is directly attributable to their great police chief who they brought in from North Dakota.  Oakland needs to fire the mayor, city council, top managers and all Edgerly's "nephews" and start again with non-criminals.  We should also stop Dellums plan to hire ex-felons for city jobs.  Oakland is a city of criminals, they rule the streets and they run City Hall.  The rest of us are just their easy marks.  Personally, I can't wait till the housing market recovers and I can sell and get out of here.  Moving to Oafland was the biggest mistake of my life.

Everytime one of these "gang" shrines pop up - - someone is killed "visiting" the shrine or waiting near the shrine to attack - enough of this ghetto crime perpetuating BS! Get it together Oakland!

I sadly suspect that forty years of Aid to Families with Dependent Children has created two or three generations of fatherless monsters who have no family experience, no family feeling, and grow up to become heartless and cold psychotic monsters, never having had any love or respect in their lives.

People like me! My first employee was a young black man from Oakland. He started at $9 hourly and made $25 in four years. I paid his way completely through four years of trade school. He currently is a foreman with the City of Oakland. He was the best employee I ever had.

Challenge? Go on a street corner and hang out with dealers and thugs? That's not a challenge. A challenge is for the dealers and thugs to go hang out somewhere and study.

I don't need brownie points. I hired him because I knew he would work hard and learn and not steal and be a good employee.  And he would have made it without me, he was willing to work and study.

And dude, I know you want things to be better. You just push people away with the capital letters and anger.

Trouble I See:  i don't think anyone wants the challenge to hang out in dangerous parts of town.  some people are fortunate enough to have decent jobs and decent living conditions, they have worked hard for this.  why would they risk it hanging around those who would jeopardize everything?

most people i know have faced challenges to get where they are.  life isn't easy.  we don't know what those on this forum have gone through as this is just a discussion board and we don't know each other personally.  i try to assume good intent on the part of most who are contributing to the discussion and i know that i have no idea of the reality they are facing.

i understand that you are feeling frustrated at not being able to see quick changes around the problems faced by the city of Oakland.  i feel the same way.  however, i'm afraid generations worth of problems can't be fixed overnight and the government (or city) can't do it alone.  we all are "the city".  we are all responsible for helping ourselves, and each other.  i know you are trying to help your friends and there are no easy answers.

since you are so passionate about making a difference, have you thought about intervening in the lives of children or teenagers?  have you thought about helping them understand the consequences of poor choices and bad behaviour?  you may be able to impact many lives this way.

as i said, i don't know you, but you seem to know a lot of people.  i think you could  help the young people by laying it out on the line for them:  go to school, behave yourself, respect yourself, respect your teachers, respect your classmates, pay attention, learn something, do your homework, study, don't "hang out", choose your friends wisely, join sports or clubs, listen to adults who are trying to help you!

by making a difference in the life of a child or teenager you can help them NOW to not end up like some that you describe who have been in trouble with the law and now find themselves in a difficult situation with no real hope for a bright future.

I grew up in Oakland. It was a nice city then. I saw it gradually go downhill starting around 1970. My parents finally moved from east oakland after someone tried to break into their home. We were so relieved. I wouldn't even let my kids play on the sidewalk outside the home I grew up in for fear that something would happen. Now look at it. A killing or more every single day. If anyone says too much about it; they are accused of being a racist. It's like a war zone in some of the places there now. I hate to say this but I willl, welfare is aiding this violence. Generation after generation on welfare. No jobs; just murdering, robbing, harassing and anything else ugly that they an do is what is going on there. The community leaders really aren't doing a thing about it or else the crime would go down not up. So sad.
